Maybe let them choose the colour with you. When you get the dye get some extra for touch ups (you don't need to use the whole pack for these so it goes a long way). Failing that just get it done and show them that you are maintaining it. The will get over it soon enough. How can I convince my parents to let me dye my hair?
You can't save the extra dye once you mix it.

Thats easy. As soon as you turn 18 DO IT!! Until then, listen to your parents. Most of the time they know what they are talking about.
You should start slow. Maybe ask them if you can get some face framing highlights; the stylist just puts in a few foils near the front of your hair to highlight your current cut and face. Getting it done at a salon is the best way to do anything blonde. They can also do it in a way so that you don't have to go in as often to get them touched up.
Or a half-head of highlights is less damaging too since less hair is being dyed. I started having my hair highlighted when i was 15. To look natural, i would have at least two colors put in, and every few times some low lights to break up the blonde so I could wait longer in between visits. I started with full head highlights, but then as I got older realized I could save money and still look as good getting the half head of highlight (they just don't highlight the unders section of your hair!).
EDIT: if you have highlights, why do you want to do an overall dye? Your hair will look terrbile! and you will need it dyed more often. Maybe you just are not getting the right highlights done on your hair... your hair should not be ';dirty'; blonde with highlights.
Omg you are the same as me except I dye my hair all of the time and it doesn't hurt the roots or anything.Go for it you will look great.Try Revlon 81 its awesome.
I will be the first to tell you that it takes upkeep. If you do it yourself at home and go for a golden blonde it will turn brassy and yellow and it will not look how you want it to look. Your best bet is just to get some highlights and go from there. Don't dye your whole head unless you dye it brown, and even so then you must use a semi-permanent dye for less damage.
