How can you find birth parents with little to no information?

My husband was adopted in 1976 in Louisville, Kentucky. We are both really wanting to know something, anything at all about his birth mother or father. We are thinking of having children of our own and if nothing else, would love to know some of my husband's medical history. It all seems impossible, as we don't have really any info ourselves, and his adoptive parents have beliefs that all records should stay sealed. Does anyone know of anything we could do or look into?
