I really want a dog, but my parents don't. Its not that their a allergic or anything, they just don't want one. How can i convince them that we should get one??
- Also the dog i want is really small (chihuahua), and i have all the money to pay for the dog.How do i convince my parents to get a dog?
first of all, it may take a while to convince them. so you must be patient.
ok, its best to go to the parent you think would agree to the dog the most. it helps, but if you cant, you'll just have to try harder.
dont pester them every minute of the day. wait a day or two between trying to convince them.
find out WHY they dont want a dog. you may be able to come up with solutions to these problems.
give them reasons for getting a dog. heres a few ideas: it will give you a companion for when you're lonely, it gives unconditional love, dogs have been proven to lower stress levels, when your parents come home from a stressful day of work, they can curl up on the couch with the little doggie. you can search more health benefits with a quick google search.
tell them how you will be caring for the dog. dont leave your parents to clean up after the dog, feed him all the time, things like that. and make sure you FOLLOW THROUGH ON THEM! you can even help out with the expenses. agree to pay for toys, leash, ID, and other things your dog will need. (you probably wont be paying for vet bills and most of the food though since that may be too much for you to handle without parents)
research how to train dogs. you wouldnt want an untrained dog. tell your parents you'll spend the time to train your dog every day.
make a presentation! take all the information from the internet and books on the breed and make a powerpoint on it. also include the pros AND cons on owning a dog. try to come up with solutions to the cons. dont forget to add the health benefits. (if you can't use powerpoint, make a poster or something similar. dont just talk, have something to actually show them)
see if other close relatives such as aunts, uncles or close family friends can get on your side to help you convince your parents.
also, try to find a chihuahua at a shelter, not from a petstore or breeder if you can. adopting from a shelter saves a life and makes it better! plus its less expensive. search the internet for shelters around you and look on the website if they have any chuhuahuas.
GOOD LUCK! ^-^How do i convince my parents to get a dog?
You can't convince your parents to get you a dog. Its their house and their rules.Dogs live for 12 or so years, minimum and your going to go to college where you will have no time for a dog and they will be stuck responsible with it.
What would you do with the dog at vacations? What about when its sick and you need to pay 500$ at least for a surgery pr anything special?
You can't. I tried everything and everything has failed. Think of the responsibilities.
You are in almost the exact same situation that I was in about half a year ago.
My parents really didn't like dogs, not that they hated them or anything, but they just didn't seem to like them too much. Dogs weren't their thing.
Do you live in an apartment? Maybe that's the reason why, although Chihuahuas can do fine in high-rise living. Do your parents think that you're responsible enough? You may say that you'll take care of the dog all by yourself, but there's a good chance you'll slack off (I know I have sometimes).
Ask them, of course. When they're in a good mood. Casually bring the subject up, don't just start yelling at them ';MOM CAN I PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HAVE A DOG!?!'; or something. At dinner, or when they're reading a book or watching TV. If they say no, convince them that you'll take care of it all by yourself. Tell them that you have enough money to pay for the dog, and that having a dog would really make you happy, and that it's been something you've wished for, for a long time.
Don't ask them all the time, just occasionally, when you think that they're in a good, reasonable mood.
If that doesn't work, use the ';Deal Method'; (I've used this to acquire many things: a Bamboo tablet, a Nintendo DS...).
Ask them if they think it's alright for you to do something to get a dog. Such as washing the dishes every night for two months, or taking out the trash and eating all your vegetables or something --- something that you really dislike doing, but you're 100% willing to do it anyway because you really want that dog. That will show them how much you want one.
It may sound awful to do chores for that long and stuff, but trust me, hard work pays off and you won't stop smiling the day you're done (I know I sure did!).
Try this method: ask for something bigger, such as a Labrador Retriever. They'll be like ';OMG NOOO!';. Calmly say ';okay'; and then ask them for a Chihuahua. Describe it to them --- tell them how big it is, how much it weighs, how much it eats, how easy it will be to take care of compared to a bigger dog. They might say Yes, but this method does not always work.
If all else fails and your parents are still a big NO, calmly accept the fact. Say something like ';Okay, I understand.'; They might suddenly be like ';wow, our kid is really growing up and not begging for everything'; and such, and they might really consider having a dog.
If ALL ELSE fails and your parents have made an oath or something to NEVER get a dog, accept it. Move on. Maybe get a different pet, such as a hamster or a bird. Maybe when you're older, your parents will consider getting one again.
Good luck! (:
tell your parents that having a dog will help you mature because of all the responisbilites you have to handle with the dog, it will help you to really grow up. Puppies are like taking care of babies so it's a lot of work. tell them you'll do everything for the puppy and your parents don't have to worry about washing or walking or feeding your puppy. tell some of the touching dog stroies in chicken soup for the dog lover's soul and tell them you'll train your puppy to do cool tricks and you could show them some videos of dogs doing cool tricks. tell them that you puppy will keep you company and be a little watchdog. :)
If they don't want a dog, there isn't a lot to do that can convince them otherwise. I've tried for years. At one point I was working at the vet and started fostering kittens. I eventually got to keep one of the kittens. As much as I wanted a dog, I love my cat, but it took a lot to get him.
Sometimes they have to fall in love with it just as much as you already are. Ask if they would consider fostering some small shelter dogs, or puppy-sitting for friends. It may help change their minds.
I just want to warn you that pets cost a lot. There's the initial adoption fees, yearly check ups that almost always go over $100, spaying or neutering if it hasn't been done yet, food, heartworm and flea medications which can get very expensive. All of this plus emergency costs. If something happens can you afford an x-ray, overnight care at an emergency clinic, transfusions, fluids, surgery, and other such costs. One emergency can cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars. It takes a lot to hold that responsibility.
Good Luck!
well, Chihuahua's are not good dogs. I suggest a Pomeranian. They are sweet, loyal, Small, and they are just too cute.
I have had Golden Retrievers all my life and they are the #1 best kind of dogs ever. My mom wanted a smaller dog so we did months of research and found out that they can be family dogs and one person dogs.
Do some research your self, and discuss with your parents what you have discovered.
Then go a month without complaining. Wake up earlier. Maybe make them breakfast. Prove to them that you can be VERY RESPONSIBLE. Don't mention the word dog or puppy for a month too.
look into adopting. there are hundreds of adorable *small* dogs out there with a terrible life that want your help to make it bigger.
Tell your parents that having a dog will not only add to the family, and warm your hearts, but it will teach you responsibility.
You don't. you respect the fact that your parents don't want a dog and move on. Just because YOU want a dog doesn't mean you should have it, especially when someone else is picking up the tab.
You say you can pay for the dog? would that be just the price of getting a dog or would that be enough money to get the dog, supplies for the dog and cover vet care for say the next two years?
The size of the dog only affects the cost of upkeep slightly. Pets are still expensive to own. They don't want a dog, respect it and accept it.
You don't - period. End of story.
You live in THEIR house. THEY pay the bills. They don't want a dog then that's just tough luck, they shouldn't have to put up with one because YOU want one.
Even if by SOME miracle you can buy this dog ($200-$1,500) and it's initial care needs ($200/supplies, $200/vet) as well as monthly needs ($150)... what about emergencies that can run over $600? What about when you have classes, have to go to work? Hang out with friends? Who is going to transport you and the dog to the vet, grooming, training?
What about when you go to college? Whose paying for that? For your car? What if dorms don't allow pets? You can't afford or find a pet friendly apartment?
NO means NO. Even if you're legally able to buy a dog and you're responsible enough to care for it, it isn't YOUR house and you aren't paying the $2,000+ a month to keep it running. Respect mom and dad, wait until you have your own place.
Write them a letter saying all the pros's and con's of getting a dog
Ask them if you can talk about it properly
Show them you are a responsible person i.e. clean up after yourself and do the occasional choir
It took me 8 years to persuade my mum and dad and we ended up getting one due to the face my sister was so scared of dogs she couldn't even go out to the park
You have to show your parents that you are responsible enough to take care of an animal. Try taking care of a hamster or a gerbil successfully for a while. This might show them you are ready for a chihuahua.
Prove yourself responsible to them, and make sure you understand that the costs involved go way beyond the initial feel to pay for the dog. If you do get a dog, please please adopt.
tell them that you found the dog tied to a tree and you let it loose because you felt sorry for it and it just followed you home.
its very expensive and chihuahua are actually not the greatest dog for a family that doesnt like dogs they are disloyal to everyone but 1 person and are usually pretty annoying. try showing them your responsible enoufh and do research
It is your parents decision and your a kid,its their house and they are adults and their decision in their house should be law.
Yes, Rescue one from a shelter.
Tell your parents you will take care of it.
:) And you will be rescueing a lovely pooch from the shelter.
